Ground source heat pumps are like air source heat pumps, in the fact that they can create renewable heat for your property and can be used for both central heating and domestic hot water. There are a couple of key differences however, between ground source and air source heat pumps. Ground source are more expensive as they require some digging into the ground, and burying of some pipe in the garden, whereby the pump extracts heat from the ground. The pump circulates a mixture of water and anti-freeze around a ground loop (literally a loop of pipe). The heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid and then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump, which then passes the heat through radiators and any other heating systems that might be in place (e.g. Under-Floor Heating) and so on. Ground Source Heat Pumps are highly efficient and with the ground remaining at a constant temperature under the surface, the heat pump can be used throughout the year – even in the middle of winter!
How bigger ground loop you require will depend on the size of your home and the amount of heat required to sufficiently heat said property. The longer loops can draw more heat from the ground, but need more space to be buried in. If space is limited, a vertical borehole can be drilled instead.
There has never been a better time to adopt to renewable heat. With the government paying people via Renewable Heat Incentive(RHI). A ground source heat pump makes economic, as well as, environmental sense.
